REVIEW: PREVENTION & MANAGEMENT OF LAPAROENDOSCOPIC SURGICAL COMPLICATIONS, 2ND EDITION. Wetter PA, Kavic MS, Levinson CJ, Kelley WE Jr, McDougall EM, Nezhat C, editors. Miami, FL: Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, 2005, 529 pp.
Volker R. Jacobs, MD, PhD, MBA, Frauenklinik (OB/GYN), Technical University Munich, Germany
One and a half decades after the minimally invasive wave changed and revolutionized operative techniques worldwide in many different specialties, knowledge and understanding of all technical aspects of the equipment, devices, and instruments used still remains the key for performing any laparoendoscopic procedure successfully and safely. Those who think that laparoscopic technique is easy and simple, intuitive and self-explaining underestimate the risk and put their patients at incalculable, unnecessary risk. Responsible use of endoscopic equipment and performance of all laparoendoscopic procedures requires comprehensive knowledge about instrument and device function as well as learning from previous operative experience and even mistakes.
It is self-evident that an international, interdisciplinary laparoendoscopic organization like the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS) with the goal and core competence of improving further medical education has a major interest and the potential to cover this topic with high-profiled authors from many different fields, ie, leading international experts in laparoendoscopic techniques. Since the first edition of Prevention & Management of Laparoendoscopic Surgical Complications was published in 1999, knowledge and techniques have dramatically grown and progressed so rapidly that it became necessary to produce an updated, expanded second edition, which comprises 26 new chapters and 59 new authors. In addition to surgical techniques with cutting-edge, up-to-date information on both specific complications of individual procedures, such as hysterectomy, and information about general issues and complications that arise in all applications of laparoendoscopic surgery, the second edition provides a broader focus on issues pertaining to laparoendoscopic surgery, such as telerobotic surgery, use of simulators in training, and a comprehensive look at credentialing past, present, and future. The book is divided into 4 sections. The first part addresses multidisciplinary laparoscopic issues. Section 2 deals with laparoscopic general surgery. The third part focuses on different kinds of gynecological surgery. Section 4 discusses endourological surgery. The list of newly added chapter topics as well as distinguished authors is too long to list here but can be found on the Web at: www.sls.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3316.
Prevention & Management of Laparoendoscopic Surgical Complications has almost doubled in length, but is still easy to read. Many illustrations, figures, photos and tables support the content. This comprehensive reference book is not only for laparoscopic beginners who need to read about complications and their prevention before they occur to avoid them, but also this book is useful for the experienced laparoscopists and for teachers and all practitioners of minimally invasive surgery to discover new aspects in the broad range of interdisciplinary laparoendoscopic applications worldwide. Therefore, this book is not only highly recommended for every clinical library, but also should find its way into every laparoscopic teaching program and training course as well.

REVIEW: PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT OF LAPAROENDOSCOPIC SURGICAL COMPLICATIONS, 2ND EDITION. Wetter PA, Kavic MS, Levinson CJ, Kelley WE Jr, McDougall EM, Nezhat C, editors. Miami, FL: Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, 2005, 529 pp.
The Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons has once again published an important, comprehensive reference book for teachers and all practitioners of minimally invasive surgery. New applications are being found for microsurgical techniques so quickly that it is imperative that cutting edge information be available to both the medical and legal communities. Prevention & Management of Laparoendoscopic Surgical Complications, 2nd Edition provides up-to-date information on both specific complications of individual procedures, such as hysterectomy, as well as information about general issues and complications that arise in all applications of laparoendoscopic surgery.
The first edition of Prevention & Management of Laparoendoscopic Surgical Complications was published in 1999. It was a sellout and has been translated into Portuguese and Chinese, thus impacting surgical management of patients in other areas of the world besides the United States. Even so, in just six years since its publication, the discipline of minimally invasive surgery has progressed so rapidly that a second edition has become a must. This second edition is far more comprehensive than the first, with more than twice the number of pages, an increase from 3 to 6 editors, 31 to 57 chapters, and 41 to over 100 authors. In addition to surgical techniques, the second edition provides a broader focus on issues pertaining to laparoendoscopic surgery, such as telerobotic surgery, use of simulators in training, and a comprehensive look at credentialing past, present, and future.
The book is divided into 4 sections. The first, comprising Chapters 1 through 16, addresses multidisciplinary laparoscopic issues, including ethical dilemmas, pneumoperitoneum, monitoring devices and anesthesia, office microlaparoscopy, ergonomics, safe use of electrosurgical devices, use of laser energy, laparoscopic abdominal access, infections, laparoscopic pediatric surgery, vascular complications, intraabdominal pelvic catastrophes, simulators, telerobotic surgery, and credentialing.
Section 2, comprising chapters 17 through 36, deals with laparoscopic general surgery, including esophageal surgery, antireflux surgery, achalasia, percutaneous tracheostomy, cholecystectomy, common bile duct disease and injury, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, liver surgery, laparoscopic splenectomy, adrenalectomy, appendectomy, colon surgery, hernia repair, ventral wall abdominal hernia, adhesiolysis, aortoiliac surgery, bariatric surgery, pancreatic surgery lobectomy, and laparoscopy for trauma.
Section 3, comprising chapters 37 through 48, examines issues related to gynecological surgery, such as endometriosis and pelvic pain, ovarian surgery, myomectomy, sterilization, tubal reanastomosis, adhesion prevention and management, ectopic pregnancy, laparoscopic hysterectomy, pelvic reconstructive surgery, lymphadenectomy, presacral neurectomy, and uterine fibroid embolization.
Section 4, comprising chapters 40 through 57, discusses endourological surgery, including ablative renal surgery; nephron-sparing surgery; reconstructive renal surgery; ureteral surgery; radical prostatectomy; radical cystectomy and urinary diversion; bladder diverticulectomy, excision of Müllerian cysts, and iatrogenic bladder injury; pelvic lymph node dissection, laparoscopy for undescended testis.
The authors of each chapter are experts and innovators in their particular fields of laparoendoscopic surgery. Exquisite medical illustrations, figures, and tables complement the cutting edge information provided in each chapter. Both editions of Prevention & Management of Laparoendoscopic Surgical Complications are dedicated to “all of the early pioneers of laparoscopic surgery in recognition of their initial efforts, often in the face of criticism and skepticism, to develop and advance minimal access techniques.” This comprehensive second edition continues the pioneering spirit of the early innovators by using a multidisciplinary approach to teach how to manage laparoendoscopic surgical complications, thus presenting nuances and techniques to all that might otherwise be missed with a narrower focus. This reference book is a must for the legal community and for teachers, medical students, and seasoned surgeons who wish to minimize the learning curve.
