WHEN WILL MINIMALLY INVASIVE AND ROBOTIC SURGERY REPLACE ALMOST ALL OPEN SURGERIES?

Minimally invasive surgery is developing fast, covering an ever growing number of operations and disciplines. Dr. Camran Nezhat’s keynote address, entitled, “When Will Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery Replace Almost All Open Surgeries?” is a review of laparoscopic surgery from its inception to the present day. Professor Nezhat, often referred to as a “Wizard” in Laparoscopy, will present his personal view, in an odyssey of science and technology, and explain where minimally invasive and robotic surgery is heading. Laparotomy was first developed in the eighteenth century with a vertical incision. In the twentieth century, it was proven that a Pfannensteil incision has superior wound healing to a vertical incision. In the twentieth century, curious minds started to explore laparoscopy, but it was not until Dr. Nezhat introduced video-assisted endoscopy in the 1970’s and 1980’s and performed the most extensive pathology by this technique, that the true potential of the method was realized. The talk ends with a look to the future and the technological advances in minimally invasive and robotic surgery in recent years. Taking an interactive approach, Dr. Nezhat hopes that the audience will help him to answer the question posed in the title. In his words, “The objectives of the lecture are: to motivate the younger physicians, bring hope to their work and education and encouragement in their careers.” Snacks provided.

FUNDAMENTALS OF ROBOTIC SURGERY (FRS): OVERVIEW AND RESULTS OF FIRST TWO CONSENSUS CONFERENCES

Objective:  To describe the development process of the FRS curriculum and document results of the project to date

Methods:  Full life-cycle curriculum development using a combined classic and modified Delphi process and adaptation of the Alliance of Surgical Specialties for Education and Training (ASSET) templates for curriculum development

Results:  The full life-cycle curriculum process was presented and accepted.  Outcomes Measures for 26 skills were defined, with associated metrics, errors and testing methodology by a consensus conference that included surgical educators, accrediting organizations, residency review committees, multiple specialty societies, and multiple surgical certificating Boards.  The FRS curriculum was developed using the ASSET Curriculum Development Template that resulted in the division of the tasks into 3 categories (pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative), and inclusion of the 26 skills into 7 specific tasks.  (1 pre-operative, 5 intra-operative and 1 post-operative) plus 5 Fundamentals of Laparoscopic (FLS) tasks  The next consensus conference will be the Validation Study Design, followed by a multi-institutional validation study by 10 participating American College of Surgeons – Accredited Educational Institutions.

Conclusions:  A rigorous methodology was utilized to define the critical Outcomes Measures for the FRS curriculum.  A curriculum of 7 tasks was developed in accordance with the ASSET curriculum template.  Input from subject matter experts from surgical education professionals and stakeholders in governing bodies, certifying organizations and multiple surgical societies resulted in a multi-specialty FRS curriculum that will be validated and offered to certification boards for their consideration.

BREAKFAST WITH THE 2012 EXCEL AWARD RECIPIENT CHARLES H. KOH, MD: LECTURE AND PRESENTATION

Dr. Koh obtained his medical degree from the University of Singapore and Board certification from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London, England. He is currently the co-director of the Milwaukee Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery and Reproductive Specialty Center. He is a Past President of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (2009). He received the 2009 Distinguished Surgeon Award from the Society of Reproductive Surgeons.

Dr. Koh specializes in advanced laparoscopic surgery and assisted reproduction. He is a pioneer in advanced laparoscopic surgery for tubal anastomosis and endometriosis and has lectured and performed live surgery on this internationally. He also pioneered a special technique and equipment for laparoscopic hysterectomy called the “Koh System for Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy” and invented instruments for laparoscopic suturing and microsurgery.

We all enjoy being mesmerized by the special effects in the movies, and marvel at the illusion of reality that is created. Mark Covey is from Digital Domain, the company that brought such extraordinary movies such as, I, Robot, Transformers, Tron, Titanic, Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings and many others. These technologies could provide enormous benefit to not only our patients but to the education of our surgeons.

2ND ROBOTIC OLYMPICS

Join us for the Robotic Olympic Games! The first robotic Olympic Games were held at the MIRA Annual Meeting in 2011, appropriately in Greece. Practice on a trainer in the Exhibit Hall and participate in the Qualifying Rounds! Top finalists will battle it out for the Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals of the Robotic Olympics at the Finale to be held on Friday September 7th in the General Session.
