Mehran Anvari, MD
Dr. Mehran Anvari is a tenured professor of surgery at McMaster University, specializing in minimal access techniques, at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. Dr. Anvari was one of the first surgeons in Canada to use robotics in surgery, establishing the world’s first telerobotic surgical service.
Dr. Anvari holds several clinical and administrative appointments. He is the past president and founding member of the Minimally Invasive Robotic Association, the scientific director and CEO of the Centre for Surgical Invention and Innovation, and the founding director of the Centre for Minimal Access Surgery. Dr. Anvari is the clinical lead and chair of the Ontario Bariatric Network and the Chair of Minimally Invasive Surgery and Surgical Innovation at McMaster.
As a researcher, supervisor, mentor and advisor, Dr. Anvari has a continued commitment to teach- ing, education, publication and innovation. Dr. Anvari is the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Medical Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery, and the founding director of the McMaster Institute for Surgical Invention, Innovation and Education. He has authored over 150 publications; holds seven patents; and is the principle investigator of numerous studies related to obesity, gastrointestinal disease, and surgical robotic systems and techniques. He has been honored many times for his innovation and research: chosen as the McMaster Innovator of the Year in 2009, and awarded the ORION Leadership Award in 2010. Dr. Anvari’s work with telerobotics has also been recognized by the federal and provincial government with the “Gold Medal of Distinction” and the “Diamond Award for Innovation in Technology”.
Jie Qiao, MD, PhD
Jie Qiao, MD, PhD serves as Director and Professor at the Medical Center for Human Reproduction, Department of OB/GYN, Peking University Third Hospital. She specializes in diagnoses and management for male and female infertility, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, and Reproductive Endocrine diseases in Gynecology.
Dr. Qiao graduated from Beijing Medical University’s Department of Clinical Medicine in 1987; obtained a Master’s Degree in Clinical Medicine in 1990 and a Doctorate in 1996. She headed the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2000 as its director with a concurrent position followed as director for the Center of Reproductive Medicine in 2003.
Most of her practicing work has been in clinical treatment, education and medical research within the fields of Obstetrics and Gynecology with a research direction focusing towards the diagnoses and treatment of diseases of Reproductive Endocrine, such as management to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and anovulatory infertility as well as reproductive treatments via In Vitro Fertilization and Embryo Transfer (test tube baby). To date, she has successively published more than 20 medical papers, and is currently a young-group member of the specialty board of the Chinese Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology under the Chinese Medical Association and a member of the editorial boards of the Chinese Journal of Minimally Invasive Surgery, Chinese Journal of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Chinese Journal of Reproductive Health, and one is of the syndics of Chinese Association for Improving Birth Outcome and Child Development.

All abdominal and pelvic MIS procedures carry an inherent risk of complications. This interactive course will present a philosophy for the prevention and management of complications during minimally invasive surgery of the abdomen and pelvis. Video segments and case presentations will be used to demonstrate principles and stimulate discussion based on participant needs identified by responses to the pre-course questionnaire. Source material will be obtained from students’ “real world” experiences and supplemented with materials selected by the faculty panel and customized based on pre-course questionnaire results. An interactive student and faculty discussion format will be utilized. This course will discuss management paradigms to prevent, recognize, and treat complications appropriately. Careful, methodical assessment and strategies for appropriate action will be stressed. Topical presentations based on student input will highlight detailed surgical anatomy, sound surgical principles and careful technique.

Advanced Laparoscopic Suturing for the Gynecologist, Urologist, General and Robotic Surgeon: "THE Vertical Zone - The Next Level Beyond Triangulation" (Including Primer for Effective Robotic Suturing)

Be one of the 90% of participants who can throw an intracorporeal knot in < 3 mins. After 90 minutes instruction in the ‘vertical zone’!
Participants will learn the uses and limitations of laparoscopic suturing with the ‘Triangulation’ algorithm. For gynecologists closing the uterus and vagina transversely, urologists anastomosing urethra to bladder, performing uretero-ureterostomy, surgeons closing colon and rectum transversely – the needle needs to move in the sagittal plane, not the side to side or coronal plane of the triangulation style. The ‘Vertical Zone’ describes our technique of suturing with two hands ipsilaterally that allows the needle to operate in the sagittal plane, while permitting a restful and relaxed attitude of the elbows, forearms and hands. Primer on robotic suturing and knot tying will be shown and discussed, so that the participants truly understand suturing applications across all platforms.
In numerous courses nationally and internationally this algorithm has allowed over 80% of participants to succeed in tying an intra- corporeal knot within 3 minutes after 2 hours of training.
With excellent fidelity, the relative hand positions and movements are immediately transferable from the trainer to the O.R. This course equips all attendees with improved suturing skills and insight into applications during surgery.

This Master’s Class is for advanced robotic and laparoscopic surgeons specializing in the treatment of endometriosis and fibroids. Leading practitioners in the fields of gynecology will discuss their experiences in the evaluation and management of these pathologies. Given the potential for involvement of nerves, blood vessels, intestinal tract, or urinary tract, and the various faces and behaviors of fibroids, surgery for endometriosis and fibroids can be very difficult. ORReady Surgical Safety and Superior Outcomes (Jointly with the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses [AORN])

ORReady is a worldwide, multispecialty initiative meant to encourage steps that are known to improve surgical outcomes and save lives. If the current guidelines such as Check Lists, Time Outs and Warm Ups are followed routinely, it is estimated that six million patients around the world could have better outcomes through error reduction. That's 2-3% of the approximately 250 million surgeries that are performed worldwide each year. This course is meant to improve awareness of safety and outcome issues and focus on how to implement systems that promote the penetration of these measures into the culture of the operating room environment and beyond. Validated warm-up procedures, introduction of empowering patients and referring physicians in the peri-operative process; and suggestions for better communication amongst the peri-operative team will be presented. Nurses, surgical technicians, surgical physician assistants, surgeons and administrators are all invited.
Objectives:
1) Describe the etiology of Operating Room Errors. Where does the error begin and time to discovery
2) What is the impact to the hospital, physician and patient of an error in the Operating Room?

Minimally invasive surgery is developing fast, covering an ever growing number of operations and disciplines. Dr. Camran Nezhat’s keynote address, entitled, “When Will Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery Replace Almost All Open Surgeries?” is a review of laparoscopic surgery from its inception to the present day. Professor Nezhat, often referred to as a “Wizard” in Laparoscopy, will present his personal view, in an odyssey of science and technology, and explain where minimally invasive and robotic surgery is heading. Laparotomy was first developed in the eighteenth century with a vertical incision. In the twentieth century, it was proven that a Pfannensteil incision has superior wound healing to a vertical incision. In the twentieth century, curious minds started to explore laparoscopy, but it was not until Dr. Nezhat introduced video-assisted endoscopy in the 1970’s and 1980’s and performed the most extensive pathology by this technique, that the true potential of the method was realized. The talk ends with a look to the future and the technological advances in minimally invasive and robotic surgery in recent years. Taking an interactive approach, Dr. Nezhat hopes that the audience will help him to answer the question posed in the title. In his words, “The objectives of the lecture are: to motivate the younger physicians, bring hope to their work and education and encouragement in their careers.” Snacks provided.

STATE OF THE ART LECTURES IN ROBOTIC SURGERY

Robotics represents yet another revolution in the application of minimally invasive techniques to surgery. While conventional video endoscopic techniques were revolutionary in their own right, they were hampered by limited instrument maneuverability and two-dimensional visualization. These technological shortcomings took away the wrist-like motion of the human hand and the depth perception of human eyes and necessitated the design of “new procedures” which were adapted to the technology. Robotics by virtue of wrist-like instrument maneuverability and three- dimensional visualization has returned the advantages of the human wrist and eyes to the field of minimally invasive surgery. For the first time in the history of minimally invasive surgery, operations which were designed to be performed by open incisions can be replicated using minimal access techniques.
A series of brief presentations by experts in the field will outline the State of the Art in the application of Robotics to the specific field in surgery. These lectures will help the attendee to develop a critical eye and assist them in the adoption of robotics into their practice.

There can be several superstars in your OR; however, you are only as good as your weakest link. The surgeon, anesthesia person, circulator, scrub person, central supply, maintenance, administration AND the patient are all part of the team. If a patient does not follow their peri-operative instruction, the surgeon is poorly prepared, or the equipment is not well maintained are all examples of the TEAM not working properly. Will the 80 hour work week be extended to every surgeon, not just residents? Do you aspire to become, or might you already be a highly competent surgeon? If “yes,” you probably pursue some specific strategies that are part of being and remaining an expert surgeon. Perhaps your strategies include:
1. Engaging in active, continuous learning.
2. Reflecting on and being self-critical about what you do as a surgeon.
3. Being open to constructive critiques by colleagues you respect.
As you likely realize, these are some of the characteristics of professionals who are, and who remain, highly competent throughout their careers in any field.
Yet, teaching is often treated differently. A lot of medical and surgical teaching is done in ways suggesting that some of our colleagues believe teaching doesn’t require any special understandings, skills or ongoing learning. In many programs the attitude seems to be that just about anyone who is somewhat expert in a specialty, such as surgery, has all that is needed for being a decent teacher.
In this brief overview, I’ll encourage you to consider that achieving excellence as a teacher is at least as demanding as achieving excellence as a surgeon. I’ll identify some steps you might want to consider taking toward becoming and remaining an even more expert teacher than you already are.

Objective: To describe the development process of the FRS curriculum and document results of the project to date
Methods: Full life-cycle curriculum development using a combined classic and modified Delphi process and adaptation of the Alliance of Surgical Specialties for Education and Training (ASSET) templates for curriculum development
Results: The full life-cycle curriculum process was presented and accepted. Outcomes Measures for 26 skills were defined, with associated metrics, errors and testing methodology by a consensus conference that included surgical educators, accrediting organizations, residency review committees, multiple specialty societies, and multiple surgical certificating Boards. The FRS curriculum was developed using the ASSET Curriculum Development Template that resulted in the division of the tasks into 3 categories (pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative), and inclusion of the 26 skills into 7 specific tasks. (1 pre-operative, 5 intra-operative and 1 post-operative) plus 5 Fundamentals of Laparoscopic (FLS) tasks The next consensus conference will be the Validation Study Design, followed by a multi-institutional validation study by 10 participating American College of Surgeons – Accredited Educational Institutions.
Conclusions: A rigorous methodology was utilized to define the critical Outcomes Measures for the FRS curriculum. A curriculum of 7 tasks was developed in accordance with the ASSET curriculum template. Input from subject matter experts from surgical education professionals and stakeholders in governing bodies, certifying organizations and multiple surgical societies resulted in a multi-specialty FRS curriculum that will be validated and offered to certification boards for their consideration.

Dr. Koh obtained his medical degree from the University of Singapore and Board certification from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London, England. He is currently the co-director of the Milwaukee Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery and Reproductive Specialty Center. He is a Past President of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (2009). He received the 2009 Distinguished Surgeon Award from the Society of Reproductive Surgeons.
Dr. Koh specializes in advanced laparoscopic surgery and assisted reproduction. He is a pioneer in advanced laparoscopic surgery for tubal anastomosis and endometriosis and has lectured and performed live surgery on this internationally. He also pioneered a special technique and equipment for laparoscopic hysterectomy called the “Koh System for Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy” and invented instruments for laparoscopic suturing and microsurgery.

CONFERENCE EDUCATIONAL METHODS AND ATTENDEE OBJECTIVES
The Minimally Invasive Surgery Week, SLS-MIRA-SRS Joint Annual Meeting employs a variety of educational formats including topical general sessions, the presentation of scientific papers, open forums, posters, and original videos offered in small specialty-specific breakout sessions, and informal gatherings of participants and expert faculty.
The increasing complexity of minimally invasive diagnostics and therapy requires a continuous educational process. The exchange of knowledge and expertise among the physicians taking part in this conference contributes to the continuation of excellence in minimally invasive surgery.
Upon completion of the conference, participants will be able to:
• Increase comprehension of the basic and fundamental principles of laparoscopic, endoscopic, and minimally invasive techniques, enhancing the participant’s understanding of these techniques;
• Understand the recent advances in laparoscopic, endoscopic and minimally invasive techniques;
• Determine the appropriate use of laparoscopic, endoscopic and minimally invasive equipment as part of a treatment plan in the care of patients;
• Comprehend the developing technologies that will be available in the future to enhance the standard of patient care; and

CANCELLATION POLICY
Full registration fees are refundable if registrant cancels before August 8, 2012. An administrative fee of $150.00 will be deducted from fees for cancellations postmarked on or after August 8, 2012 through August 22, 2012. Refund requests will not be considered after this date, including visa denial refunds. All requests for refunds must be made in writing and received by SLS, attention Flor Tilden, by the appropriate dates. Refunds will be processed within 6 to 8 weeks after the conference.
No refunds will be made after August 22, 2012.

Join us for the Robotic Olympic Games! The first robotic Olympic Games were held at the MIRA Annual Meeting in 2011, appropriately in Greece. Practice on a trainer in the Exhibit Hall and participate in the Qualifying Rounds! Top finalists will battle it out for the Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals of the Robotic Olympics at the Finale to be held on Friday September 7th in the General Session.
